THE SUITCASE, A MODERN-DAY HEADACHE
Vacations often start long before you’re even in the car. Planning the trip, looking for the passport you were convinced you had stashed away in the dresser drawer and, of course, the eternal question that even the older children struggle to answer: “What are we taking?”
So, girls, off to the attic to get your biggest suitcase, give it a quick dusting and off we go! We’re off to fill it up together and find the right balance between comfort, lightness and style.
1. PLAN YOUR OUTFITS
The first step is to analyze your trip to determine the type and number of pieces you’ll need. How many days? What kind of weather? What activities are you planning? Do you want to laze on the beach or go for a hard hike?
You can then draw up a list of the things you’ll need (this will help you avoid that moment when the floor disappears under the mountains of clothes, girls!).
Make several columns with: underwear, leisure, essentials, toiletries, accessories and clothing. It’s these last two categories that interest us.
Again, you can divide the clothing section into several columns: either by type of clothing (tops, bottoms, dresses/suits), or by occasion (beach, hiking, evening etc.). Whichever method you choose, make sure you have an outfit for every situation and activity. No one wants to end up in a dress for a hike with elevation changes…
2. CHOOSE VERSATILE PIECES
When choosing your outfits, the first thing to keep in mind is the versatility of the pieces. So, with one top, you can put together 3 outfits and so on. So bring out your inner minimalist and use the famous mix & match method!
For example, a simple white t-shirt can be worn with shorts by day and a skirt by night. A shirt dress can be transformed into a tunic or worn on its own. By opting for multifunctional garments, you reduce the number of pieces you need to take with you. It’s the best way to travel light and stay stylish!
When it comes to colors and patterns, to avoid fashion faux-pas, we recommend a palette of neutral colors and discreet prints. Neutral tones are easy to combine, allowing you to create several different outfits with a minimum of clothing.
But don’t forget to pick up one or two punchier pieces, just for fun 😉
3. CHOICE OF MATERIALS
Natural materials like cotton, linen or merino wool are ideal for traveling. They are breathable, comfortable and low-maintenance. What’s more, these fabrics tend to retain odors less easily and dry quickly, making them ideal for on-the-go washing.
In any case, always opt for lightweight, crease-resistant fabrics. We love linen for summer, but we love it even more on a hanger after a steamer. We’d advise you to leave your linen ensemble in your dressing room, but don’t worry, it’ll look great in the office 😉
4. CASUAL WARDROBE ESSENTIALS
Minimalism means basics. So here’s a list of pieces to include in your suitcase:
- Neutral T-shirts: White, gray, black, these colors go with everything.
- Comfortable jeans: A good pair of jeans is essential for cooler evenings or days out walking (you know us, we don’t go anywhere without sturdy denim).
- Shorts: In denim or cotton, these are THE vacation piece.
- Light dress: A flowing cotton dress is ideal for the beach as well as for city outings or bar nights.
- Light jacket: A denim jacket has a place in your suitcase. Ideal for cooler evenings.
- Swimsuit: Choose a swimsuit that you feel comfortable in, and that can also be worn as a bodysuit under shorts or a skirt.
5. CHOOSE THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES
This is the element not to be neglected if you don’t want to end up with boring, sober colors. Accessories can transform a simple outfit into a stylish look. But since we can’t carry them all, here’s a short, non-exhaustive list:
- Bandana / scarf: lightweight and not taking up too much space, a patterned scarf or colorful bandana can quickly add panache to your outfits. In your hair, on your neck, in your handbag, it’s the versatile accessory you need on vacation!
- Belt: in this case, it’s best to take it easy. A belt takes up less space than a pair of jeans, but can still be imposing and heavy. We therefore advise you to choose a very thin one and a more substantial, slightly bohemian one. The belt will embellish your silhouette over a dress or shorts and finish off the outfit.
- Minimalist jewelry: A few fine, discreet pieces can enhance an outfit without taking up too much space.
- Sunglasses: Essential for protecting your eyes and adding a “je ne sais quoi” to your look.
- Hats or caps: A straw hat for the beach, a felt hat for parties or a cap for hiking. The choice is yours!
- Bags: depending on how much space you have left in your suitcase, you may want to consider taking several. A basket for the beach, a backpack for hiking and a small shoulder bag for the city and evenings out – these are not just fashion accessories, they’re also very useful and even essential 😉
6. SPECIAL POINT SHOES
Comfortable and stylish – that’s the credo of the shoes you’ll be packing. The trick is to pack as little as possible, so yes, we know we’re ending up with the biggest headache of all, but we’re here to help!
- Sandals: don’t skimp on comfort, girls. Don’t go on vacation with brand-new sandals, as your feet will probably sulk throughout your stay and not want to take you anywhere. Wear your sandals regularly before you leave to make sure they’re comfortable, and opt for a versatile color like black or camel. They’ll be your everyday footwear, but they’ll also be your footwear for evenings out and special occasions, so choosing them is crucial!
- Flip-flops: lightweight and space-saving, flip-flops are a must-have if you’re going from beach to beach. Here again, comfort is a must. We all remember that pair of flip-flops that gave our toes a rough time, and we can tell you that this one will never leave for the tropics again!
- Sneakers: whether you’re more of a hiker or a city stroller, sneakers can come in very handy on vacation. White low-top sneakers always do the trick for a casual look, and once again, comfort is paramount.
